Clogged Drain

When more than one fixture backs up together the blockage has moved past the trap and into the main, and continuing to run water only pushes it into the lowest drain in the house.

When this becomes an emergency

What a pro does

The first question a plumber answers is how far down the stoppage sits, because that decides the tool. One slow lavatory is local. A tub and a laundry standpipe going at the same time means the branch or the main. In the old mill-village neighborhoods around Kannapolis, Gastonia and Roanoke Rapids the drain waste stack is often original cast iron, and after eighty years the inside is furred with scale that narrows a four inch line to something closer to three. Soap and lint catch on that rough surface. A cable with the right head cuts a path through, then the plumber runs water long enough to see whether the line actually carries a full load or just drains a trickle. If the pipe is that far gone, a camera goes down next to show the owner what the wall of the pipe looks like. Cleaning a line and cleaning a line so it stays clean aren't the same job, and the second one starts with knowing what the pipe is.

Frequently asked questions

Scale. The inside of an aging cast iron drain builds a rough crust that keeps growing inward, so the effective diameter shrinks and everything passing through has something to snag on. Houses built for textile mill workers in the Piedmont are often still on their original stack, which is why the same line clogs again every few months.
It adds a step. Outside the sewered towns, plenty of North Carolina homes run to a tank, and a slow drain can be the tank being full rather than the line being blocked. The plumber checks the level at the tank before cabling, because pushing a cable through a line into a tank that is already at the outlet does nothing.
They matter, so say if any went in. Standing caustic liquid in a trap is a hazard for whoever opens that line, and on old metal drain pipe repeated use can eat at the thinnest sections. Mentioning it up front changes how the job is opened, not whether it gets done.
By what happens after cabling. A blockage clears and stays clear for a while. A broken or bellied section clears for a day and then does the same thing again, because the defect is still there holding solids. A camera settles it, and that inspection is what turns a repeat visit into a one time repair.
