An overflowing toilet is either a local problem or the first symptom of something much bigger, and a plumber sorts that out in the first few minutes. If only that one fixture backs up, the blockage is in the trap or the closet bend, and an auger reaches it. If the tub and the toilet argue with each other, the line beyond them is the issue. In the sandy soils of eastern and southern North Carolina, a great many homes run to a septic tank with a drainfield sized for ground that drains well, and after a stretch of heavy rain the water table can rise into that field. When the field cannot accept water, the tank backs up toward the house, and the lowest fixture is the one that shows it. The plumber checks the tank level to tell that apart from a plugged line, because the fix isn't remotely the same. Sometimes the answer is pumping and a conversation about the field. Sometimes the toilet just needs pulling, and there is a toy in the trap.

Subfloor and wall base absorb contaminated water quickly, and in a house over a crawlspace whatever runs through the floor keeps going into the insulation. Drying it out is a separate job from the plumbing repair, and it is worth handling promptly rather than after the smell arrives.
