The plumber runs the lateral from a cleanout out toward the street, marks the depth and location of the defect from the surface, and then everyone can talk about a repair that is actually aimed at something. In the older Piedmont towns the two things that turn up over and over are roots and Orangeburg. Red clay holds moisture at the pipe, so oak and sweetgum roots follow the line and work into every joint they find, and a clay tile lateral has a joint every few feet. Orangeburg, the tar impregnated fiber pipe used widely in postwar neighborhoods around Burlington, Reidsville and Wilson, does something different. It deforms into an oval and collapses under its own load without any root help, and cleaning it doesn't buy much time. Once the plumber knows which is which, the choice is between spot repair, a full replacement in an open trench, and a trenchless method that either lines the existing pipe or pulls a new one through it. Yard trees, driveways and depth usually decide that more than anything else.
